Chairman Elect

Joseph M. (Joe) Gilman currently serves as Chairman Elect of the Board of Directors of the Sigma Nu Educational Foundation.  He recently completed 8 years of service on the Fraternity’s board (High Council), having held the position of Regent (national president) during the 2008-10 biennium.  He has been active in Sigma Nu since his initiation in 1973 as a founding member (Theta Tau 2) of his chapter at Morehead State University (Kentucky), where he served as a Chapter Advisor, Alumni Chapter President, and Housing Corporation President.  He was the first inductee of his chapter’s Hall of Honor.  He also served for many years as a regional-level officer of the Fraternity in Kentucky, Alabama, and Georgia.  In recognition of his ties to the chapter at the University of Georgia, he was recently invited to affiliate as a non-matriculate and was inducted as Mu 2440.    

Professionally, Joe is an Executive Director in Network Operations for AT&T, based in Atlanta.  His organization has responsibility for process engineering and quality management for AT&T’s domestic and international network.  He has spent his entire career in the telecommunications industry having previously held a number of executive positions in BellSouth, which merged with AT&T in 2007.  These positions included leadership of the company’s long distance operations, head of business planning for the European division while based in Brussels, project manager for the creation of the second telecommunications carrier in Australia, and head of new services implementations.  

Joe has a Master's Degree in the Management of Technology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Morehead State and was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 2001 in recognition of his successful career.  In addition to his role in Sigma Nu, Joe serves as secretary of the Board of Directors of HazingPrevention.Org and recently completed his term as president of the Board of Governors of the MIT Sloan Fellows Program.

He and his wife, Susan, live in Atlanta and are the parents of three daughters—Emily, Natalie, and Hannah.
